Foosball Rubber Bumpers
Foosball bumpers are a part typically made of black rubber that provides a barrier or a cushion between the wall of the table and the man. These bumpers are designed to absorb impact and are required because the force in which the man would hit the side wall or bearing could otherwise cause a lot of damage. However, there are some lower-end or European foosball tables that are made with spring bumpers that help absorb impact and allow you to move the man closer to the wall.

Foosball bumpers are supposed to be installed at both ends of the rod inside the table. Without bumpers, the men would slam into the sides of the table and would cause damage to the table over time. The dense black rubber bumpers solve this problem by hitting the walls without harming the table, even at high speeds. The few tables out there that have bumpers made of metal springs can do some damage to the table walls if hit hard enough because they do not have enough tension to stop the man from hitting the wall. Rubber bumpers provide the proper spacing for the movement of the men on the table.
Foosball Bumpers Can Lubricate The Rods
One tip that you should know, especially if you play foosball on bar tables, is you can slide the rubber bumpers to the end of a foosball rod to clean and lubricate the rod. As the bumper slides down the rod, it will clean some of the build-up off the rod. Also, some silicone is usually still on the inside of the foosball bumper and this will lightly lubricate the rod to give you a smoother and faster rod. This will also help you perform foosball shots at a higher level. We do not recommend using this tip on your home table because you should just apply more silicone to the rod instead of sliding your bumpers on the rod. Sliding your bumpers on the rod can cause them to flake and wear down the life of the bumper, especially if you have applied WD-40 to the rod in the past. Read our foosball silicone section to learn how to properly apply silicone to your rods.
